A Luxurious Retreat : A Review of The Danai, Greece

Tucked away along the enchanting coastline of Halkidiki, The Danai Beach Resort & Villas offers a sophisticated blend of luxury and tranquility in Greece.

This review explores how The Danai redefines high-end hospitality with its elegant accommodations, world-class amenities, and breathtaking seaside views.

From the exquisite dining experiences to the unparalleled service and serene surroundings, The Danai promises a perfect escape for those seeking a lavish Greek getaway.

Join us as we delve into what makes this exclusive resort a top choice for discerning travelers.

Arriving at the destination

Upon being picked up at Thessaloniki airport and transported to The Danai, we arrived in a location that left me uncertain as to whether our driver was taking us on an idyllic route or directly towards the clutches of kidnappers.

I questioned if he truly knew our names or if my own blunder led him to address us properly. Would it be safe for me to abandon ship while still en-route?

Could I justify leaving my loved ones behind knowing they might cope better than myself should things take a darker turn?

Those criminals probably don’t even have Toto toilets! Nevertheless, more pressing thoughts plagued me: Had I neglected some important task like shutting off the oven back home? And how could Ben Affleck possibly possess so many Academy Awards?!

Luckily, we reached a sizable gate and past it was an idyllic atmosphere that mirrored the ambiance of a delightful retirement community – but more positively.

Infrastructure

Your attention is immediately captured by the exquisitely kept gardens, which are a credit to their skilled caretaker.

The interior design, however, has an old-fashioned vibe that seems outdated and unsuitable – somebody obviously needs to be let go for this!

Ironically though, it enhances the character of the place; giving off vibes as if it’s a time-worn hamlet disregarded both by fashion and designers alike.

Although the decor of Porto Zante may appear intentionally unattractive, at this location it seems to stem from a state of ignorance and contentment.

The furnishings resemble those left behind in an abandoned haunted house attraction that have been combined with elements reminiscent of an eternal ’80s nightmare.

Although not quite as abominable as Porto Zante’s aesthetic choices, this establishment is certainly rivals its level of unpleasantness.

Environment

Nestled beside the Aegean Sea, the Danai exudes serenity and features a private beach enveloped by verdant flora for an exceptional seaside adventure.

Engage in sun-kissed moments under grand pine trees on this distinctive sandy shore that stands out from European counterparts as it rightfully earns its title of being called a real “beach.” Though predominantly pebble-dotted, keep your eyes peeled to spot some glorious sections of velvety sand.

Though the property’s footprint is limited, a majority of its amenities are concentrated in close proximity to reception.

Nevertheless, they provide buggies for transportation purposes. Should visitors require such assistance at One&Only Kea Island, it may feel like an arduous task akin to scaling Mount Everest while securely fastened onto a stretcher with sellotape.

The suggestion of utilizing buggies could even be perceived as patronizing idleness–an act so lackadaisical that indolent individuals might take offense if only they bothered enough to care.

The rooms in the bungalows and apartments were the only things that could be considered spread out, but they didn’t exude luxury. We opted for a villa to stay in, which also lacked luxurious amenities.

However, what was screaming horrendously loud were the mosquitos attacking me relentlessly.

Apartment

The setup of the room amenities was flawless, from the customized fruit bowl to our preferences. However, we found it odd that a champagne holder was provided without any accompanying bottle.

Additionally, chaos arose among the kids as there was only one gift present for them. Nonetheless, during this mini crisis, an attentive bar manager overheard our daughter’s disappointment about not receiving a turtle welcome gift and magically substituted with a plush toy instead.

This act exemplifies textbook service recovery; incorporating oranges into his trick added even more charm to endearing experience overall!

During our stay, we booked their top-rated accommodation – the White Villa – which boasts four bedrooms.

The villa features two indoor upper deck bedrooms, an additional outdoor connected room and a lower level bedroom.

Upon arrival at the villa, one may not be captivated by its apparent extravagance as seen through its outdated key fob system , visibly antiquated air conditioning unit and worn-out door handle.’

However upon entering inside things start looking up albeit marginally- Starting with a living area that appears inspired by Beetlejuice’s designer on LSD!

From hand chairs to sofas it looks like furniture dismantled from Socrates’ yard sale without any clear design coherence in sight. The bathrooms are slightly better but reminiscent of writing love notes to your tormentor .

Disregarding the aesthetic, which may become tolerable over time – or if you’ve lodged at Porto Zante, perhaps satisfactory in your mind – the central problem lies with the air conditioning.

Its noise resembled an airplane vigorously rubbing against a gardening tool and during nighttime hours it failed to provide sufficient coolness, hampering restful sleep.

Assistance

Although not flawless every time, The Danai frequently achieved near-perfection. Its staff have worked for several generations and even their offspring continue to follow in their footsteps – such as the daughter of the F&B director who also works there.

This generates an undeniable sense of pride among employees which translates into exceptional service that springs from genuine contentment.

The level of service exceeded our expectations based on previous stays at One&Only Aesthesis and One&Only Kea Island.

Right from the initial meal, they demonstrated an understanding of all food preferences and even made light-hearted remarks about my attempts to customize a Greek salad, which ended up being far removed from its original form after they had omitted everything I disliked.

The hotel staff was well-versed in the art of providing excellent service and demonstrated their expertise by promptly assisting guests during meal times, as well as engaging with children at breakfast.

Although there were some communication issues observed during dinner time, overall it still exceeded expectations.

While a butler or WhatsApp could have provided better communication options, ultimately the only issue encountered was being charged for welcome amenities without prior disclosure on the invoice.

Meals

Apart from the disappointing first lunch, all of the other meals were excellent. There is a great variety of options available:

Anithos located by the beach offers an intriguing mix of genuine Greek cuisine, exquisite seafood dishes and barbecues in a chic open-plan setting with cream and white furnishings enhanced by wooden accents.

The lower terrace just steps away from the sea provides more seclusion for diners looking to appreciate their meal without distractions,

while Andromeda situated on its iconic marble veranda presents contemporary Mediterranean fare amidst pine trees or inside an airy hall that boasts awe-inspiring panoramic views through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows.

Additionally, both restaurants are considerate enough to offer dedicated kids menus for younger customers’ convenience.

As you make your way to breakfast, there is a dedicated bakery that lures you in with its endless array of pastries.

While the rest of the buffet is satisfactory and the a la carte menu mostly features eggs, it’s worth returning solely for their impressive selection of sugary delights – enough to give anyone diabetes.

Clearly taking desserts seriously, they even present them on trays which I wish was standard practice across all eateries; this would save me from forever making regrettable choices while my companion Lucie consistently selects winners.

We did not try The Squirrel’s fine-dining option, as it only has five tables available.
